Pre-IB

Foundation Course Pre-IB

You will take part in a foundation course from August to December in which you work on the basics of language (ap), an introductory natural sciences course (nv), and basic study methods (at). This foundation course aims at helping you gain methods and techniques that will make you better-prepared to manage a course of higher education. You will complete courses in study technique, reading and IT.

Basics in Language (ap) Pre-IB

Basics in Language is part of an introductory course at gymnasium in Denmark, involving Danish and foreign languages. Grammar is an important aspect of this part of the foundation course, as the better you are at grammar and at forming sentences, the clearer and more precise you are in what you wish to say.

The aim is that you gain more knowledge and a better overview of the relationship between languages and the manner in which we communicate through them.

Natural Sciences (nv) Pre-IB

Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Physical Geography are combined in this part of the foundation course. Maths is also incorporated into it. You will be introduced to scientific method through carrying out experiments and observations both in the laboratory and in the field.

These experiments and observations will be used by you, in conjunction with Maths, to make assessments and measure and work out results using calculators and Excel. By working in this way and realising the relationship between theory and practice, you gain a wider knowledge of natural science with regard to its limitations and possibilities.

Basic Study Methods (at) Pre-IB

Everyone in the first year has this as part of the foundation course. It is, however, not a subject, but a number of hours allowing interdisciplinary study. The aim is to show you that a topic can be explained using not one but a number of subjects, e.g. English together with Physics and Maths or Social Studies together with History.

You will gradually become more aware of what the various subject areas deal with, and what it is that is special for each of them regarding method and knowledge.

Choosing IB

You have chosen what you wish to study from the beginning of the school year. However, a final decision has to be made at Christmas time, and we will naturally help you with this.

You and your parents will be invited to an evening meeting where the IB-Coordinator will inform you about IB. It is also possible to have a personal meeting with the IB Student Counsellor on this evening or during school time.

The IB Tutor System

You and everyone else in the Pre-IB class will have a study tutor. This will be one of your teachers. Focus is on the work done in your subjects. You meet with your tutor periodically, work out subject aims, and extend or readjust them in relation to your work.
